      Abstract189)      PDF(pc) (7194KB)(45)       Save
Through historical research and analysis of the dissemination process of the ancient Chinese agricultural book The Farming and Weaving Map in Japan. Examining how it spread to Japan through the“ Maritime Silk Road” , and was gradually altered into the form of farming drawing such as“ four-season farming pictures” and“ silkworm Farming and Weaving Pictures”with its own characteristics. Research has found that the process of the transmission of The Farming and Weaving Map to Japan was a fusion of Zen culture and the shogunate culture of the Muromachi period in Japan. The cultural intention of the implied meaning of the technical education and the dissemination of orthodox symbols in the Farming and Weaving Pictures was weakened. The aesthetic function was amplified. By transforming the The Farming and Weaving Map into a Japanese art piece, it connects the power control of Zen temples and shogunates, highlighting the cultural taste of the rulers and achieving cultural change. This transformation not only inherits the symbolic meaning of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, but also endows Japans farming pictures with a stronger religious connotation in cultural imagery.

      Abstract162)      PDF(pc) (6088KB)(106)       Save
Crowdfunding publishing endows the publishing industry with new value, offering a solution to the current challenges faced by traditional print publishing. It effectively addresses the publishing difficulties of niche and out-of-print books, enhances the social attributes of book publishing, extends the industry chain, increases added value, and elevates the collecting and appreciation potential of books. As a standout platform, MoDian provides valuable data on the success of crowdfunding publishing. Leveraging multiple linear regression analysis, it constructs a model to analyze the factors influencing the success rate of crowdfunding publishing. The results indicate that factors such as the number of supporters, the percentage of basic tier contributions, update frequency, and the number of tiers significantly impact the success rate of crowdfunding publishing. Initiators of crowdfunding projects should scientifically set target amounts and tiers, enhance project transparency and exposure, and prioritize the selection of high-quality intellectual properties (IPs).

      Abstract148)      PDF(pc) (6440KB)(78)       Save
This study demonstrates the feasibility of applying the Semantic Publishing domain ontology construction theory to the digital publication of literary works, specifically focusing on the case of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a representative work in the genre of serious historical novels. The proposition suggests that conducting ontology construction research on Romance of the Three Kingdoms can serve as a paradigm for ontology construction in other types of novels. Subsequently, the paper elucidates the current application status of domain ontology construction in the publishing field, further analyzing the principles and methods applicable to ontology construction in the domain of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The study establishes five principles—clarity, consistency, expansiveness, intelligence, and openness—as the ontology construction principles for Romance of the Three Kingdoms, building upon internationally recognized ontology construction methods such as the seven-step method to formulate a nine step methodology for ontology construction in the context of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Following this, the paper practically deduces that five of the nine steps, verifiable through manual editing, can be used to validate the feasibility of applying ontology construction to Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Finally, the research provides insights into future prospects.

Construction and Application of Social Function Evaluation System of Academic Journals : Taking English-Language Journals Funded by the Excellence Action Plan for China Scientific Journals as an Example
      Fu Guole Zhang Zhiqiang
      Publishing Journal    2024, 32 (2): 24-.
      Abstract138)      PDF(pc) (7551KB)(95)       Save
This study starts with the basic academic functions of academic journals, clarifies the path from academic functions to social functions, and constructs the evaluation system of social functions of academic journals. The social function evaluation system has “Chinese characteristics” for its focus on journals’ social regulation and multiple evaluation dimensions like political guidance, ethical norms, economic impacts and social impacts. Social function evaluation is of industrial urgency for the international development of China’ s English language scientific journals. Due to problems such as publishing integrity and “map”, the guidance of social function evaluation is necessary. In this study, 10 English-language scientific journals funded by the China Excellence Program are evaluated based on the social function evaluation system. It suggests that in promoting China’ s English-language scientific journals into world first-class ones, political guidance and ethical norms of social function evaluation should be followed, and marketization and participation in public spheres should be emphasized to include economic and social impacts in the evaluation system. The social function evaluation system could help China solve SCI “supremacy” in the evaluation of its Chinese and English journals and steer academic journals back to their original intention of running journals.

Based on 87 texts of professional discourse within the editing domain, this study explores the issue of professional authority construction expressed by editors in professional discourse. Editorial authority, legitimized as a form of power, guides editors to establish legitimacy through professional knowledge, ethical standards, and occupational norms, forming a contractual agreement with society. In the practice of editing, editors apply their knowledge and wisdom to make informed judgments and decisions. The institutional guarantees, decision-making authority, and influence provided to editors, coupled with the cultivation of professional knowledge and skills through self-discipline and the support and trust of relevant communities, collectively construct the professional authority of editors. The three legitimacy mechanisms—cognitive legitimacy, moral legitimacy, and consensus legitimacy—shape the social acceptance foundation of editorial authority, revealing the intricate social mechanisms that constitute editorial authority.

Epistemological Reflection on the Concept of Editing—Focusing on the Discussion of the Concept of “Two Kinds of Editing”
      Duan Lechuan
      Publishing Journal    2024, 32 (1): 12-.
      Abstract127)      PDF(pc) (6255KB)(99)       Save
In the process of defining the concept of editing, there has been a discussion on the concept of “two types of editing”. One perspective originates from the professionalization of the publishing industry, defining editing as a product that emerges after the professionalization of editing. The other perspective, rooted in the belief that editing activities have existed since ancient times, defines editing as a cultural construction activity that has remained homogeneous throughout history. The divergence between the concepts of “two types of editing” is based on different epistemological perspectives, with the former leaning towards a constructivist epistemology and the latter adhering to an essentialist epistemology. The scientific cognition of the editing concept requires not only acknowledging the differences between these epistemologies but also a transformative shift in epistemology – a transition from “concept as a method” to “method as a concept”, and from “concept as history” to “concept as practice”.

Based on Henri Lefebvre’ s theory of spatial production, individuals in immersive performances manifest a novel presence in space termed as “immersive presence.” Grounded in its formal, content, and functional characteristics, the three elements of immersive performances— composite media, narrative text, and interactive experiences—interweave and interact, constituting a spatial production mechanism of “three in one” encompassing medium space, narrative space, and responsive space. In the bidirectional interactive process between individuals and space, the spatial value of immersive performances is constructed. This is achieved through the shaping of scenes, the judicious application of technology to stimulate spatial efficiency, the expression of content, highlighting the cultural value of space, and the cultivation of thematic IPs, constructing a cultural communication discourse system. In these three aspects, the value expression of immersive performances is realized.

      Publishing Journal    2024, 32 (1): 99-.
      Abstract88)      PDF(pc) (7134KB)(77)       Save
The phenomenon of using woodblock printing to reproduce and reprint books that emerged in modern China represents a unique scenario during the transitional phase between old and new printing technologies and the publishing industry. To some extent, this phenomenon brought a new wave to remote and underdeveloped regions that modern publishing enterprises struggled to reach, supplementing the scarce educational resources in those areas. Through the examination of physical editions and literature, this study systematically investigates the temporal span, geographical distribution, and characteristics of the types of newly printed books through woodblock printing. The traditional woodblock printing industry, facing the impact of foreign cultures and technologies, not only collided and competed with the new printing industry but also endeavored to assimilate and leverage the prevailing trend of new cultural influences. However, due to its inefficiency, especially in a rapidly changing society where there was an increasingly
urgent demand for news and knowledge, the traditional woodblock printing industry eventually phased out of the historical stage.

      Abstract88)      PDF(pc) (5558KB)(68)       Save
The paper provides a concise overview of the introduction of the modern concept of“ publishing” from Japan to our country and compares the differences in this concept across China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It dissects the connotation and extension of the“ publishing” concept during three stages of development in China, asserting that the evolution of the concept is a consequence of practical development, exhibiting trends towards industrialization, a reduction in technological emphasis, and an intensification of ideological and cultural attributes. Comparing the connotations of the“ publishing” concept between eastern and western contexts, and grounded in Marxist philosophical thought, the paper argues that a significant characteristic of the contemporary“ publishing” concept is cultural subjectivity, which is evidenced in cultural selection, cultural processing, cultural innovation, and cultural exchange. The editorial phase is identified as the pivotal link in the publishing chain, with editors being the key contributors to cultural subjectivity.

      Publishing Journal    2024, 32 (2): 52-.
      Abstract86)      PDF(pc) (5775KB)(69)       Save
Conceptually, the “integration of stores and libraries” responds to the needs of a new era and a new culture. In practice, it realizes a high degree of complementarity between service targets and content resources. It can also vigorously promote the participation of brickand-mortar bookstores in nationwide reading. The realization of “integration of bookstores and libraries” is mainly achieved through three models: bookstore-led where the main body is individually operated, library-led where the main body is public in nature and government-led where it is rooted in the community. The stable and sustainable “integration of stores and libraries” provides readers with rich content resources and service experience value, solves the existential
crisis and creates cultural, creative and economic value for bookstores, empowers libraries with value for cultural promotion and public service. Aiming at the problems existing in the universal service of “integration of bookstores and libraries”, this paper puts forward the countermeasures
and suggestions to promote the development of store and library integration, such as focusing on the service objectives precisely, giving full play to the advantages of resources, enhancing the value of services.

      Abstract84)      PDF(pc) (8742KB)(68)       Save
From 1913 to 1937, the relationship network woven by the directors serving at the Commercial Press exhibited a typical three-tiered association system of core, semi-peripheral, and peripheral layers. Within subgroups, directors had diverse experiences in their tenures, contributing to a rich internal network structure. The formation process of the network resembled the expansion of water ripples, radiating outward in concentric circles with internal directors at the core. This phenomenon was driven by the inertia extension under path dependence, homogeneous selection in social networks, and director selection based on resource dependence. Consequently, it is suggested that in the process of constructing directorial relationship networks within publishing enterprises, attention should be given to three insights: combining organic networks with mechanistic networks, integrating homogeneous and heterogeneous connections, and balancing efficiency optimization with saturation optimization.

Research has found that vocal reading activities in China can be traced back to ancient times. From the perspective of the relationship between body and reading, audio reading presents four evolutionary stages : ritualized reading, mobile reading, independent reading and interactive reading. The body presents functions of text, access, companionship, and perception, which subsequently drives the relationship between body and reading from unfamiliar to interactive. Based on the current practice of audio reading, the article proposes that audio reading should return to the body, create an immersive reading space, fully cover the access scene of the body, shape a virtual avatar to accompany vulnerable groups, and further promote the interaction and upgrading of the body and audio reading.

The findings of this research reveal an imbalance in the distribution of thesis formats and a low proportion of joint guidance. Furthermore, there is an excess of applied research but insufficient foundational research. The theoretical foundation of these theses is relatively weak, and the research perspectives are often constrained within narrow boundaries. The research methods employed show a trend towards diversification, however, the standardization and innovation in these methods still need further improvement. In the future,it is recommended to adopt a multidimensional assessment and joint guidance. Both theoretical research and practical publishing initiatives should be pursued simultaneously, emphasizing both standardization and
      innovation in research methods.
