The Interactive Narrative of Chinese Online Literature : Media Perspectives,Textual Spaces, and Narrative Practices
      Chen Qi
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (5): 32-44.
      Abstract1304)      PDF(pc) (9478KB)(169)       Save

This study proposes a tripartite framework encompassing media, story, and practice to deeply analyze the generative logic and operational mechanisms of interactive narrative within this context. The multi-symbolic and interactive material properties of digital media fundamentally reshape the textual forms of online literature and enable a tri-dimensional interactive practice among readers, establishing the essential preconditions for interactive narrative to emerge. The convergence of digital media and storytelling constructs an accessible textual space for reader participation. This space is intrinsically structured by intertextuality and dynamically expands under the dual driving forces of commercial imperatives and narrative logic. Immersed within this textual space, readers co-construct narrative practices through their tri-dimensional interactions (humanmedia, human-text, human-human interaction):engaging in productive reading to co-create the core narrative by generating story interpretations and influencing authors; leveraging community collectives to propel narrative dissemination through both implicit data-driven participation and explicit grassroots campaigns; and contesting narrative authority through re-creation practices like fan fiction and database production to establish new narrative meanings.

      Abstract1147)      PDF(pc) (10995KB)(168)       Save

Research on the concept of data publishing is progressing through three stages inception, initiation, and engine. Scientific data publishing aims to address the activities of scientific data review, public disclosure, dissemination, storage, and citation emerging from scientific data sharing. Big data publishing emphasizes the application of big data technologies and the discovery of secondary data. Whereas data publishing is characterized by taking the publication of data as a key element. Previous studies on the concept of digital publishing have shortcomings such as excessive emphasis on technological empowerment while neglecting the role of technological dissolution, lack of consideration for data element foundations, and a focus on publishing technology innovation while neglecting the overall consideration of publishing industry innovation. Therefore, in the process of discrimination and debate, the concept of data publishing has been reconstructed. Data publishing is the activity of publishing data development and utilization, management services, and security activities, which is a new stage of publishing development with publishing data as the key element.

      Abstract1098)      PDF(pc) (1710KB)(127)       Save

Based on the perspective of the Metaverse and focusing on the demand for highquality development of integrated publishing, this study first analyzes the four opportunities brought by the Metaverse to integrated publishing: the upgrading of user experience, the innovation of publishing models, the enhancement of service capabilities, and the reform of narrative models. It then systematically sorts out the core obstacles in Metaverse publishing practice, which are related to content generation, interaction experience, copyright ethics, and technology implementation. Furthermore, the study explains the empowerment mechanism of AIGC for Metaverse publishing from three dimensions: improving the efficiency of content creation, optimizing the level of intelligent interaction, and strengthening the depth of multimodal integration. Finally, it proposes three practical paths: the construction of virtual publishing spaces, the upgrading of intelligent human-computer interaction, and the generation of multi-modal knowledge. This research aims to clarify the internal logic of the collaborative empowerment of AIGC and the Metaverse for integrated publishing, and to provide theoretical reference and practical insights for the publishing industry to break through technical bottlenecks, reconstruct the service ecosystem, and achieve in-depth integrated development.

      Abstract1062)      PDF(pc) (8209KB)(134)       Save

This study analyzes the methods and challenges of mainland publications entering the Hong Kong and Macao markets and proposes optimized measures for their entry into these markets in the context of Greater Bay Area integration. This study identifies that the Hong Kong Book Fair, bookstore retail, and copyright exports are the primary channels for mainland publications to enter the Hong Kong and Macao markets. During this process, mainland publishing companies face the following challenges : the relatively small size of the Hong Kong and Macao markets, leading to high costs per unit; cumbersome import and export procedures, and slow capital repatriation; mainland book layouts may not align with the reading habits of Hong Kong and Macao readers; limited policy support and insufficient financial assistance. To address these issues, this paper proposes targeted optimization strategies at the macro, meso, and micro levels, including establishing branches and subsidiaries in Hong Kong and Macao, strengthening targeted policies, enhancing financial support, and fostering an environment conducive to cultural exchange.

      Abstract1028)      PDF(pc) (1778KB)(122)       Save
This paper takes Amazon’ s publishing ecosystem as the research object to explore its process of platform-based reorganization of cultural practices. The study focuses on four core dimensions : the reconfiguration of cultural practices, digital enclosures, platform surveillance and market capture. These processes profoundly exemplify the underlying logic of platform capitalism within the neoliberal framework—achieving comprehensive penetration of cultural values by capital through transforming cultural production and social interactions into quantifiable market transactions. This paper particularly emphasizes that books, as the primary vehicle of cultural symbols, have become dual objects of both capitalist operations and technological intervention during the process of platformization.

      Forces
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (6): 32-42.
      Abstract872)      PDF(pc) (1930KB)(137)       Save

From the perspective of new quality productive forces, this paper traces the evolution of AI-synthesized voice technology from its early stage of “mechanical sound” to the current phase of “human-like expression”, and explains how this transformation drives paradigm shifts in content creation. Based on the analysis of the subject-responsibility relationship in infringement activities, it constructs a framework for analyzing copyright infringement in AI-generated short videos from the behavior-consequence mapping perspective. The findings reveal several issues within the copyright protection ecosystem, including the liquefaction of legal boundaries, the detachment of “fair use”, and the imbalance between platform profit logic and copyright protection structures. Drawing on relevant domestic and international laws and cases, the study proposes a three-dimensional copyright governance framework of “Technology-Platform-Law”, along with concrete pathways such as embedding identifiable watermarks and emotion-filtering technologies, promoting intelligent hierarchical content review on platforms, implementing voiceprint-based copyright confirmation, and improving the global co-governance legal framework and institutional system.

Data Operations in University Presses across China, the U.S. and the U.K. : Progress, Influencing Factors and Pathway Recommendations

      Ling Qing Yang Dandan
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (6): 51-62.
      Abstract853)      PDF(pc) (1933KB)(119)       Save

Firstly, this paper reviews the primary development characteristics of university presses across China, the United States, and the United Kingdom,Chinese university presses emerged as a formidable force after China’ s reform and opening-up. Through corporate restructuring, they gained status as market competitors. Following exploration and optimization in the digital era, they entered a phase of multi-tiered data operations, giving rise to data operation leaders. American university presses, with their spirit of breaking and innovating, have effectively addressed challenges such as the rapid declined of the traditional library allocation market, reduced university subsidies, and the constantly evolving academic publishing model under the dominance of digital technology. In the United Kingdom the digital revolution and open access publishing model have given rise to a new wave of university presses, injecting fresh vitality into the imbalanced landscape of British university publishing. Secondly, it analyzes the different stages of data operation progress and their characteristic manifestations among university presses in the three countries. Progressive university presses have seized the new opportunities in data operation brought about by digital technology and open science. First-class university presses, after accumulating highquality content and brand equity, have entered a competitive stage of data operation. Leading university presses have advanced into a mature phase of data operation, transitioning from product development to ecosystem construction. Thirdly, it explores three influential factors driving data operation in university presses, a policy environment conducive to promoting and facilitating data operation, including tax subsidies, various forms of funding support and professional assistance from university press associations, which effectively alleviate the manpower shortage and cost pressures; the accumulation of content and brand equity, which helps university presses establish competitive barriers; and excellent management capabilities coupled with an enterprising and innovative publishing spirit, providing institutional guarantees for the construction of data operation ecosystem. Finally, it proposes path recommendations for promoting data operation in Chinese university presses through three subjects : for the policy level, expanding funding sources, strengthening funding project management, and offering targeted tax incentives ; for the university press level, seeking breakthroughs by identifying their own positioning and exploring co-collaborations; and seeking professional supports from university press associations.

An Analysis of the “Nomadic” Practical Characteristics of Socialized Reading from the Perspective of the “Liquid” Scenario
      Tao Xihong Zhou Chuanqi
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (5): 5-13.
      Abstract814)      PDF(pc) (7398KB)(139)       Save

Social reading platforms have constructed an entirely new “fluid” reading environment

for public reading, marked by the flexibility of time, the dissolution of spatial constraints, and the micro-fragmentation of content. In this scenario, readers increasingly favor a “nomadic” reading experience, leading to their thinking and behavioral patterns becoming more fragmented and individualized. Individual readers establish dispersed communities of shared interests with other readers and gradually become immersed in the temporary sense of identity that this connection engenders. While socialized reading has established a new reading ecosystem, it also gives rise to challenges such as the shift in reading focus, the weakening of logical coherence in reading behavior, and the diminished value of reading feedback, all of which impact reading effectiveness. To mitigate these issues, platforms should guide users toward deeper engagement with core reading content by enhancing the adaptability of book presentation formats, organizing thematic in-depth reading activities, implementing reward systems, streamlining operational pathways, and integrating one-click social sharing options.

Theoretical Logic and Practical Characteristics of Overseas Dissemination of National Image in the Process of China’ s Publishing “Going Global”
Pan Wennian Li Jiajia Lu Jihai
      Publishing Journal    2026, 34 (1): 93-103.
      Abstract793)      PDF(pc) (9553KB)(126)       Save
In the contemporary context of globalization, digitalization and networking, the overseas communication of national image in the process of “going out” of Chinese publishing has unique theoretical logic and practical characteristics. The theoretical logic reveals the theoretical inevitability and internal regulation of China’ s publishing “going out” to spread the national image, which is mainly reflected in the following aspects : symbolic logic enables the media presentation and multiple expression of the national image by means of ideographic, coding and narrative, and with the help of symbolic characteristics; carrier logic relies on material representation, content form and circulation channels to build the material and channel basis for the dissemination of national image; the audience logic has laid the audience foundation for the dissemination of national image from the three dimensions of reader group, pluralistic characteristics and reading effect. The deep embedding of digital technology also makes this kind of communication show unique dynamic characteristics : the theme presentation has changed from single narrative to multi-dimensional expression, the content symbol has realized the transformation from traditional to modern, the communication subject has changed from government led to multi subject collaborative creation, the narrative logic has changed from interpretation dependence to discourse consciousness, the communication channel has expanded from single path dependence to multiple integration symbiosis, and the audience positioning has changed from broad coverage to precise focus. The presentation of these features points out the driving direction and future space for the in-depth intervention of digital technology, and also provides a new perspective and method path for relevant theoretical research and overseas practice, which is conducive to improving the international communication ability of Chinese publishing and the overseas communication efficiency of the national image.

      Abstract768)      PDF(pc) (7374KB)(137)       Save

Guided by situated cognition theory, this paper analyzes the contextualized pathways of digital reading cognition: socio-historical-cultural contexts, digital technological contexts, and bodily experiential contexts. Based on the contextual characteristics of these three pathways embeddedness, virtuality, and embodiment—an evolutionary mechanism for the interaction between digital reading cognition and specific contexts is proposed from the perspectives of social cognition, technological tools, and bodily experience. The embeddedness of socio-historical cultural contexts provides a foundational force that shapes digital reading cognition; the virtuality of digital technological contexts drives the development of digital reading cognition; the embodiment of reading experience contexts illustrates the adaptation of digital reading cognition. Finally, grounded in cognitive agency, a practical pathway for digital reading cognition to construct reading contexts is outlined. Embeddedness highlights the holistic construction of reading cognition toward digital reading infrastructure; virtuality facilitates the creative production and internalization of digital content by reading cognition; embodiment reinforces the preference of reading cognition for irrational factors such as interest, imagination, and insight.

Study on the Reconstruction of the Ecological Niche of Chinese University Presses Driven by Digital Transformation
      Chen Yuanyuan

      Abstract712)      PDF(pc) (1761KB)(128)       Save

Employing niche theory as the analytical framework, this study focuses on the niche reconstruction of Chinese university presses in the context of digital transformation. First it analyzes the four characteristics of university presses : dual-track resource acquisition, dualfunction orientation, deep embeddedness of relational networks, and performance evaluation that needs to respond to the demands of multiple stakeholders. These characteristics constitute the internal constraint for their transformation. Second, it sorts out the external competitive landscape. Among them, commercial digital content platforms achieve niche monopolization through resource aggregation; educational technology enterprises promote niche fusion by means of scenario embedding; and traditional commercial presses carry out niche innovation relying on market agility, thereby exerting external pressure on university presses. Finally, it proposes three reconstruction strategies, namely defensive, offensive, and symbiotic strategies. The defensive strategy safeguards the core niche in academic publishing through technological protection and institutional advantages; the offensive strategy expands the value space based on cutting-edge technological breakthroughs; and the symbiotic strategy broadens niche boundaries by virtue of cross-subject collaboration. It indicates that successful niche reconstruction must match the technological and institutional endowments of presses, while the focus of future competition will lie in the control of standards. This not only clarifies the digital transformation path for university pressesbut also provides Chinese solutions for the publishing industry to achieve a balance between technological innovation and compliance.

By analyzing the materiality of book components such as paper, ink, and binding, and by seeking “sensory evidence” from tactile, olfactory, and visual perspectives, this study argues that the interaction between the material properties of books and sensory experiences generates meaningful connections and influences the production of meaning. Tactility serves as the source of mediated reality in reading, olfaction extends the sensory dimensions of books, and vision forms preconceived experiential frameworks. A perspective on book publishing based on materiality and iconicity was proposed, where material elements provide sensory experiences and influence meaning generation.

      Abstract663)      PDF(pc) (1669KB)(417)       Save
The publishing industry widely anticipates that AI will empower traditional publishers to achieve digital transformation. Yet this technological optimism obscures the unequal distribution of benefits and the struggle for dominance triggered by the entry of diverse stakeholders—led by technology companies—into the publishing sphere. Drawing on the theoretical framework of sphere transgressions, this study critically examines how technology companies erode the autonomy of publishing, leveraging their technological advantages. Their transgressions have evolved from content distribution to content gatekeeping and ultimately to content production shifting from peripheral intervention to deep structural reshaping of the industry. Under the prevailing discourse of “digital-intelligent empowerment”, publishers face increasing dependence on tech companies, a redefined industrial logic, and a crisis of dominance—becoming the “nourishment” for technological expansion and the “scaffold” for their own displacement. To address these risks, the study recommends establishing fair benefit-sharing mechanisms among stakeholders, strengthening the coordinating role of publishing associations, and initiating “counter-transgressions” strategies that leverage publishers’ content resources.

The research focuses on the relationship between Zhang Zhidong and Guangya Book Bureau, analyzing it from four aspects: in terms of the establishment background, Guangya Book Bureau served as a platform for Zhang Zhidong to disseminate the wisdom of ancient philosophers, continue the Qing Dynasty’s governance philosophy of “upholding the fundamental principles of the country”, and implement his advocacy of “practical application in governing the country” in Guangdong. In terms of organizational structure, he skillfully engaged in dialogue with local academic traditions, employing former students and officials while also incorporating the “Dongshu School” to establish a model of “interaction between politics and academia”. In terms of publishing content, the focus was on historical classics in Qing dynasty, highlighting the characteristic of “using history to inform politics” and reflecting his academic orientation of “practical application in governing the country”. In terms of power operation, the rise and fall of the Guangya Book Bureau was closely related to Zhang Zhidong’s political career, gradually declining after his departure from office. The research specifically demonstrates the decisive shaping role played by local governors in the late Qing Dynasty on Guangya Book Bureau , the key role of local academic traditions and academic resources in the operation of Guangya Book Bureau, and the deep interaction between publishing and politics.

The global outbreak of COVID-19 has constituted a historical turning point for the cross-cultural communication of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In the process of building a “global village” health community, TCM, as the wisdom crystallization inherited by the Chinese nation for thousands of years, can promote economic and trade activities and serve global health. Meanwhile, TCM publications, as knowledge carriers and cultural exchange media, can carry forward outstanding traditional Chinese culture and enhance cultural identity. Through an in-depth analysis of the current situation of TCM publications’“going global”, it is found that although certain achievements have been made, there are also many problems, such as the homogenization of forms, the lagging of narrative paradigms, the weak adaptability to the audience, and the mismatch between policy supply and demand. To break through the dilemma, a series of targeted optimization paths can be adopted, including precisely selecting topics in line with international demands, improving translation quality, innovating publication forms, building new scenarios for knowledge dissemination, creating TCM cultural IPs, developing a new media science popularization matrix, utilizing policy resources, and broadening international channels.

Grounded in the technological reality of digital publishing, this study explores its embedded historical residues and cultural heterogeneity from a media archaeological perspective. As a publishing form that integrates text encoding, algorithmic orchestration, and interface operations, digital publishing not only carries the functional logic of content digitization, but also reveals deep layers of material residue through its dependence on file formats, protocol standards, and hardware infrastructures. The logic of databases and platforms compresses heterogeneous media experiences into standardized linear content streams, while obsolete technological paths and non-mainstream publishing practices persist as “ghosts of technologyhaunting the dominant publishing mechanisms. In this sense, the development of digital publishing does not follow a trajectory of continuous, linear progress, but rather evolves through rupture, recursion, and heterogeneous assemblage. By analyzing the materiality, heterogeneity and nonlinearity of digital publishing through the lens of media archaeology, it may be understood as a media system reassembled from historical remnants—offering a critical

The Polyphony of Time: A Study on the Cultural Practice of Nostalgic Reading in an Accelerated Society
      Guo Jing Li Ruidi
      Publishing Journal    2026, 34 (1): 62-72.
      Abstract521)      PDF(pc) (9404KB)(117)       Save
Taking nostalgic reading as the research object, this study employs virtual ethnography and in-depth interviews, and conducts analysis within a three-dimensional analytical framework encompassing temporal experience, symbolic memory, and technological mediation. The findings indicate that nostalgic reading can be categorized into three practical pathways: direct nostalgia associative nostalgia, and hybrid nostalgia. These respectively correspond to embodied return triggered by the materiality of books, the activation of collective memory through textual symbols and the reproduction of memory under the intervention of algorithms and platform mechanisms. By reconstructing temporal perception and modes of bodily engagement in reading, nostalgic reading functions as a form of “decelerated” practice in response to the acceleration and fragmentation of contemporary reading. Meanwhile, under conditions of platformization and capital logic nostalgic reading increasingly exhibits tendencies toward the fragmentation of memory symbols and the proceduralization and commodification of emotional experience, thereby giving rise to risks of weakened authenticity and cultural homogenization. This study deepens understanding of differentiated reading cultures in the digital age from the perspectives of temporal politics and media practices, and provides analytical pathways and empirical reference for future research.

By the mid-19th century, children’ s book industry in the U.S had long been bound by British imports and the tradition of moral discipline, and local creativity was marginalized. Lee and Shepard(1862—1904), as the first modern specialized children’ s book publisher in America promoted the transformation of children’ s books from moral tools to mass cultural commodities through aesthetic innovation in the “natural style” creation, serialized publication and professional operations. Not only did it lead the era of change in the popular publishing of children’ s books but also marked the modern shift of children as an independent cultural audience.

      Abstract505)      PDF(pc) (9644KB)(154)       Save

This article explores the transformation of the publishing industry in the era of digital civilization from a civilizational perspective. It argues that digital civilization is marked by the dematerialization of information carriers, networked social relations, algorithmic social organization, accelerated temporal structures, the deep integration of the real and the virtual and the shift in the significance of value creation. These features fundamentally reshape the production, circulation, and consumption of knowledge, driving publishing to shift from a printbased industrial system toward a data-centered knowledge ecosystem. The article identifies four major drivers of publishing transformation: technological change, policy orientation market mechanisms, and civilizational imperatives. It further outlines the main directions of this transformation in terms of value reconfiguration, formal innovation, and product upgrading. The study emphasizes that publishing transformation is not merely a technological adjustment but a systemic reorganization involving concepts, content, technology, talent, business models, and organizational structures, through which publishing can reconstruct its cultural authority and social functions in the digital age.

      Abstract449)      PDF(pc) (7843KB)(112)       Save
Starting from the symbolic representation of digital reading traces and drawing on the relevant theories of symbolic interactionism, this study constructs a new interpretive framework for digital reading traces. The study concludes that digital reading traces have symbolic characteristics such as symbolic, interactive, dynamic, and digital multimodal. As a product of the interaction process between readers and texts, digital reading traces are first initiated by readers in the reading process, and complete self-dialogue and group interaction with the help of symbols. Secondly, readers adapt to the influence of technical elements and social situations on the basis of the interaction between text expectations and reading expectations, and complete the interpretation of the meaning of the text. Thirdly, the dialectical development of self-group cognition is realized in the complex interaction between the individual and society. On the basis of fully grasping the interactive process of digital reading traces, digital reading traces also provide important value for the integration of cross-media symbols, the empowerment of meaning production, and the aggregation of social cognition, and provide practical guidance for digital reading platform publishers to optimize digital content services and build a sustainable reading ecology.
