Thorns Under the Rose: A Study on the Cross-Cultural Communication Effect of Chinese Online Literature: Analysis Based on the Texts in the Comment Section of Reddit
      Tian Li Man Yunjiu
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (3): 96-107.
      Abstract1168)      PDF(pc) (10141KB)(101)       Save
This study employs a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research, to conduct an in-depth analysis of the effects of cross-cultural communication of Chinese online literature. The findings indicate that translation challenges and cognitive levels are significant factors influencing overseas readers’ acceptance of Chinese web novels. Overseas readers are often attracted to the external cultural symbols presented in online texts, yet they display a profound rejection of the grassroots characteristics of popular culture contained within. Furthermore, they tend to overlook the deeper cultural values, leading to a disconnect between the“ form” and “quality” of Chinese online literature in cross-cultural dissemination. This study recommends enhancing the quality of online literature translation, emphasizing cultural adaptability, and raising creators’ awareness in cross-cultural communication to showcase the diverse aspects of Chinese culture.

      Abstract942)      PDF(pc) (9271KB)(116)       Save
As an emerging productive force driving the digital transformation of the audio publishing industry, AI speech synthesis technology is not only reshaping production models and industrial ecosystems but also engendering three critical legal risks : the protection of personality rights, copyright compliance, and data security governance. A comparative legal analysis indicates that the United States has developed a multilayered legislative framework to effectively mitigate risks, whereas the European Union has adopted a unified legislative approach to enhance transparency regulation and platform accountability. Drawing upon foreign regulatory experiences and integrating them with China’ s governance imperatives, this study proposes a composite legal framework based on the tripartite structure of“ rights definition–regulatory adaptation–risk prevention.” This framework entails establishing the independent legal status of voice rights and refining the criteria for infringement determination, formulating compliance regulations for the use and dissemination of copyrighted content, and strengthening security governance in the collection, storage, and cross-platform sharing of voice data. Simultaneously, proactive international cooperation should be pursued through the establishment of transnational regulatory mechanisms to address global governance challenges. By fostering the convergence of domestic regulatory frameworks with international legal mechanisms, this approach seeks to provide a robust institutional safeguard for the sustainable and orderly development of the audio publishing industry.

The Cross-Media Narrative of Allen Ginsberg’s Photobooks : Paradigm, Process, and Significance
      Sheng Yu , Ouyang Qian
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (4): 106-113.
      Abstract803)      PDF(pc) (9573KB)(101)       Save

This study analyzes the rhetorical strategies employed in Allen Ginsberg’ s photobook, focusing on the interplay between text and image. It reveals that Ginsberg embeds poetic imagination within the symbolic gaps between handwritten text and photographs, creating a cross-media narrative paradigm of “snapshot poetics.” This process manifests both in the historical dimension, where isolated images are transformed into temporal archives and in the body writing dimension, which reconstructs the embodied presence and group interactions of the “Beat Generation” artists. Based on this, the study explores the cross-media narrative significance of Ginsberg’ s photobook in constructing the cultural image of the “Beat Generation” poets. It highlights the breaking of the limitations inherent in single-media narratives and how establishing a framework for perceiving sacred moments facilitates a layered transition in cultural writing. Ultimately, on an individual level, the study activates the reader’ s awareness of the artist’ s existential state ; on a collective level, it decodes the cultural identity of anti-traditional artists ; and on a macro level, it reconstructs the socio-cultural coordinates of the “Beat Generation” literary movement.

      Abstract788)      PDF(pc) (9478KB)(80)       Save

This study proposes a tripartite framework encompassing media, story, and practice to deeply analyze the generative logic and operational mechanisms of interactive narrative within this context. The multi-symbolic and interactive material properties of digital media fundamentally reshape the textual forms of online literature and enable a tri-dimensional interactive practice among readers, establishing the essential preconditions for interactive narrative to emerge. The convergence of digital media and storytelling constructs an accessible textual space for reader participation. This space is intrinsically structured by intertextuality and dynamically expands under the dual driving forces of commercial imperatives and narrative logic. Immersed within this textual space, readers co-construct narrative practices through their tri-dimensional interactions (humanmedia, human-text, human-human interaction):engaging in productive reading to co-create the core narrative by generating story interpretations and influencing authors; leveraging community collectives to propel narrative dissemination through both implicit data-driven participation and explicit grassroots campaigns; and contesting narrative authority through re-creation practices like fan fiction and database production to establish new narrative meanings.

      Abstract629)      PDF(pc) (6671KB)(86)       Save

The emergence of workers’ class consciousness and the growing sense of “relative deprivation”, the strong organizational power of the Commercial Press Labor Union and Employees’ Unions, the sympathy and encouragement from external social forces, as well as the cycles of prosperity and austerity in the company’ s operations—these were key factors that transformed labor relations at the Commercial Press from initial harmony to persistent conflicts. The influences behind these labor disputes were highly complex, stemming both from external pressures and the internal dynamics of the enterprise. The dominant factors varied across different periods, giving rise to distinct phases in the labor-management landscape of the Commercial Press. Unlike the conventional perception of strikes as resistance against oppression, the labor issues at the Commercial Press primarily manifested as a series of disputes centered on rights advocacy and interest negotiation.

Research on the concept of data publishing is progressing through three stages inception, initiation, and engine. Scientific data publishing aims to address the activities of scientific data review, public disclosure, dissemination, storage, and citation emerging from scientific data sharing. Big data publishing emphasizes the application of big data technologies and the discovery of secondary data. Whereas data publishing is characterized by taking the publication of data as a key element. Previous studies on the concept of digital publishing have shortcomings such as excessive emphasis on technological empowerment while neglecting the role of technological dissolution, lack of consideration for data element foundations, and a focus on publishing technology innovation while neglecting the overall consideration of publishing industry innovation. Therefore, in the process of discrimination and debate, the concept of data publishing has been reconstructed. Data publishing is the activity of publishing data development and utilization, management services, and security activities, which is a new stage of publishing development with publishing data as the key element.

The Visual Presentation and Reading Guidance of Woodblock-Printed Books: A Study Based on the Mid-to-Late Ming Dynasty
      Yang Sen Yang Lu
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (3): 108-118.
      Abstract550)      PDF(pc) (11311KB)(89)       Save
The visual presentation of woodblock-printed books can be roughly divided into two levels: external and internal. Externally, boxes, volumes, scrolls, and folios create a hierarchical structure that guides different levels of reading practices; prefaces, tables of contents, main texts, and colophons divide the text into parallel units, accompanied by layout styles corresponding to the functions of these units. The combination and arrangement of layout elements provide readers with varied visual intervals, achieving effects akin to long shots, panoramic views, or close-ups, resembling a“ cinematic language.” Internally, the form complements textual prompts that convey classification information, activating the reader’ s prior knowledge and decoding memory, thereby accelerating the reading process. The source text undergoes“ woodblock-style” reorganization, guiding reading comprehension. Based on the different objectives of book publication, official, private, and workshop editions all take into account the targeting of their respective audiences during the publication process. Whether in terms of external visual style or internal textual form, corresponding adjustments are made to achieve distinct meaning orientations.

Reshaping and Incentivizing : Reconceptualizing Editorial Subjectivity in the Digital Intelligence Era
Wang Zhigang , Zhao Yingqiao, Lu Bing
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (4): 5-13.
      Abstract549)      PDF(pc) (8158KB)(129)       Save
In the era of digital intelligence, the issue of editorial subjectivity has undergone transformative changes that demand transcending the traditional subject-object dichotomy framework. Editorial subjectivity now manifests as an “intersubjectivity” dynamically generated through human-technology interactions, evolving into a human-machine intersubjectivity shaped by the interplay between human and artificial intelligence. Under the “human-machine hybrid subjectivity” paradigm, AI technologies are fundamentally reshaping editorial subjectivity through three key transitions : from individual to collective subjectivity, linear to distributed subjectivity, and experience-based to data-driven subjectivity. Meanwhile, to address potential alienation issues arising from technological artifacts during development, this study reaffirms editors’ crucial role as “power subjects” in cultural construction and ethical governance. It emphasizes their irreplaceable function in regulating technology application and guiding value orientation, thereby maintaining the humanistic essence of editorial practice within intelligent systems.

This paper takes Amazon’ s publishing ecosystem as the research object to explore its process of platform-based reorganization of cultural practices. The study focuses on four core dimensions : the reconfiguration of cultural practices, digital enclosures, platform surveillance and market capture. These processes profoundly exemplify the underlying logic of platform capitalism within the neoliberal framework—achieving comprehensive penetration of cultural values by capital through transforming cultural production and social interactions into quantifiable market transactions. This paper particularly emphasizes that books, as the primary vehicle of cultural symbols, have become dual objects of both capitalist operations and technological intervention during the process of platformization.

      Epistemic Injustice in Academic Publishing
      Zheng Quan, Bai Huiren
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (4): 14-22.
      Abstract533)      PDF(pc) (7427KB)(87)       Save

Fricker’ s theory of epistemic injustice examines the epistemic oppression arising from identity prejudice and the lack of interpretative resources within knowledge transmission. Academic publishing, as a fundamental institution of global knowledge production and dissemination, exhibits deep-seated epistemic injustice due to structural imbalances in knowledge circulation. This manifests primarily as linguistic injustice (where English hegemony systematically undermines the credibility and interpretive frameworks of non-native Englishspeaking scholars) and citation injustice (involving the systemic neglect of cognitive contributions from scholars based on gender, geographic location, and disciplinary affiliation). These injustices are rooted in the legacy of epistemic colonialism, the institutionalized hegemony of Western academic centrism, and the resultant evaluation systems. Consequently, they not only hinder participation by marginalized scholars, distort judgments of knowledge credibility, and suppress pluralistic interpretive frameworks, but also lead to the homogenization of humanity’ s public knowledge systems, the marginalization of indigenous knowledge, and ultimately exacerbate inequities in knowledge distribution. To advance towards epistemic justice, academic publishingrequires the following structural reforms: constructing academic evaluation system, empowering knowledge democratization through artificial intelligence, and cultivating an inclusive academic community culture. These measures are essential for constructing a more well-ordered global knowledge ecosystem.

      Abstract517)      PDF(pc) (14741KB)(102)       Save
Images are the life and subject of picture books. Absurd picture books use image design as a starting point, creatively creating styles, narrative clues, graphic and textual relationships, theme selection, and other aspects. They use unreasonable, illogical, and meaningless image elements to achieve the understanding of real logic and physical time and space. Absurd picture books not only reflect the reconstruction of the rationality of picture books, but also embody the instinctive fantasy and game spirit, which are in line with the psychological and thinking characteristics of children. They can create value beyond knowledge tr ansmission and moral education, and can achieve insight and value guidance for childhood aesthetics and children’ s culture. Based on this, combined with children’ s interests, preferences, behavioral reactions, and reading styles when reading absurd picture books, it can provide some inspiration for exploring and applying absurd elements in picture book creation and reading guidance.

Data Operations in University Presses across China, the U.S. and the U.K. : Progress, Influencing Factors and Pathway Recommendations

      Ling Qing Yang Dandan
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (6): 51-62.
      Abstract454)      PDF(pc) (1933KB)(63)       Save

Firstly, this paper reviews the primary development characteristics of university presses across China, the United States, and the United Kingdom,Chinese university presses emerged as a formidable force after China’ s reform and opening-up. Through corporate restructuring, they gained status as market competitors. Following exploration and optimization in the digital era, they entered a phase of multi-tiered data operations, giving rise to data operation leaders. American university presses, with their spirit of breaking and innovating, have effectively addressed challenges such as the rapid declined of the traditional library allocation market, reduced university subsidies, and the constantly evolving academic publishing model under the dominance of digital technology. In the United Kingdom the digital revolution and open access publishing model have given rise to a new wave of university presses, injecting fresh vitality into the imbalanced landscape of British university publishing. Secondly, it analyzes the different stages of data operation progress and their characteristic manifestations among university presses in the three countries. Progressive university presses have seized the new opportunities in data operation brought about by digital technology and open science. First-class university presses, after accumulating highquality content and brand equity, have entered a competitive stage of data operation. Leading university presses have advanced into a mature phase of data operation, transitioning from product development to ecosystem construction. Thirdly, it explores three influential factors driving data operation in university presses, a policy environment conducive to promoting and facilitating data operation, including tax subsidies, various forms of funding support and professional assistance from university press associations, which effectively alleviate the manpower shortage and cost pressures; the accumulation of content and brand equity, which helps university presses establish competitive barriers; and excellent management capabilities coupled with an enterprising and innovative publishing spirit, providing institutional guarantees for the construction of data operation ecosystem. Finally, it proposes path recommendations for promoting data operation in Chinese university presses through three subjects : for the policy level, expanding funding sources, strengthening funding project management, and offering targeted tax incentives ; for the university press level, seeking breakthroughs by identifying their own positioning and exploring co-collaborations; and seeking professional supports from university press associations.

Research on the Infringement Dilemma and Collaborative Governance of AI-synthesized Voice in Derivative Short Videos from the Perspective of New Quality of Productive
      Forces
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (6): 32-42.
      Abstract435)      PDF(pc) (1930KB)(78)       Save

From the perspective of new quality productive forces, this paper traces the evolution of AI-synthesized voice technology from its early stage of “mechanical sound” to the current phase of “human-like expression”, and explains how this transformation drives paradigm shifts in content creation. Based on the analysis of the subject-responsibility relationship in infringement activities, it constructs a framework for analyzing copyright infringement in AI-generated short videos from the behavior-consequence mapping perspective. The findings reveal several issues within the copyright protection ecosystem, including the liquefaction of legal boundaries, the detachment of “fair use”, and the imbalance between platform profit logic and copyright protection structures. Drawing on relevant domestic and international laws and cases, the study proposes a three-dimensional copyright governance framework of “Technology-Platform-Law”, along with concrete pathways such as embedding identifiable watermarks and emotion-filtering technologies, promoting intelligent hierarchical content review on platforms, implementing voiceprint-based copyright confirmation, and improving the global co-governance legal framework and institutional system.

      Abstract433)      PDF(pc) (7398KB)(76)       Save

Social reading platforms have constructed an entirely new “fluid” reading environment

for public reading, marked by the flexibility of time, the dissolution of spatial constraints, and the micro-fragmentation of content. In this scenario, readers increasingly favor a “nomadic” reading experience, leading to their thinking and behavioral patterns becoming more fragmented and individualized. Individual readers establish dispersed communities of shared interests with other readers and gradually become immersed in the temporary sense of identity that this connection engenders. While socialized reading has established a new reading ecosystem, it also gives rise to challenges such as the shift in reading focus, the weakening of logical coherence in reading behavior, and the diminished value of reading feedback, all of which impact reading effectiveness. To mitigate these issues, platforms should guide users toward deeper engagement with core reading content by enhancing the adaptability of book presentation formats, organizing thematic in-depth reading activities, implementing reward systems, streamlining operational pathways, and integrating one-click social sharing options.

      Xu Yuan Yuan Xiaoqun
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (5): 14-22.
      Abstract416)      PDF(pc) (7374KB)(61)       Save

Guided by situated cognition theory, this paper analyzes the contextualized pathways of digital reading cognition: socio-historical-cultural contexts, digital technological contexts, and bodily experiential contexts. Based on the contextual characteristics of these three pathways embeddedness, virtuality, and embodiment—an evolutionary mechanism for the interaction between digital reading cognition and specific contexts is proposed from the perspectives of social cognition, technological tools, and bodily experience. The embeddedness of socio-historical cultural contexts provides a foundational force that shapes digital reading cognition; the virtuality of digital technological contexts drives the development of digital reading cognition; the embodiment of reading experience contexts illustrates the adaptation of digital reading cognition. Finally, grounded in cognitive agency, a practical pathway for digital reading cognition to construct reading contexts is outlined. Embeddedness highlights the holistic construction of reading cognition toward digital reading infrastructure; virtuality facilitates the creative production and internalization of digital content by reading cognition; embodiment reinforces the preference of reading cognition for irrational factors such as interest, imagination, and insight.
