Antitrust Exemption of Book Resale Price Maintenance
      Zhu Gonghuan
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (1): 76-90.
      Abstract1138)      PDF(pc) (12103KB)(64)       Save
Incorporating buyer resistance forces into the analytical framework of antitrust law reveals several key insights. First, the implementation of book resale price maintenance (RPM) strategies does not necessarily lead to price hike-type damages. Second, RPM lacks the conditions to impose effective vertical restraints on distributors. Third, it is difficult for publishers and distributors to enter into cartel conspiratorial behaviors. Finally, the welfare of consumers may not necessarily be reduced. It is elucidated that book resale price maintenance can curtail publishers’ double-price-raising behavior at the efficiency level, prevent dealers who are unwilling to provide pre-sale services from free-riding, and ensure a diversified supply of books and a diversified layout of bookstores at the cultural level. This should be weighed by following the analytical idea of “prohibition in principle + exemption from exceptions” . The exemption system for book resale price maintenance must be improved in four aspects: adopting a discretionary exemption model, limiting the duration and type of exemptions, clarifying the conditions for efficiency exemptions and cultural diversity exemptions, and incorporating an exemption procedure beforehand.

Between the Visible and the Invisible :Research on the Self-Management Practice of the Privacy Boundary of Digital Reading Traces
      Lu Mengmeng Zhang Yunqi
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (1): 66-75.
      Abstract481)      PDF(pc) (8886KB)(93)       Save
Based on the privacy management theory, this study adopts the in-depth interview method to reveal individuals’ management practices regarding the privacy boundaries of digital reading traces from three progressive levels, namely privacy boundary recognition, privacy boundary coordination, and privacy boundary balance. It promotes an understanding of the dynamic relationship between individual reading behaviors and social reading interactions in the digital reading era. The study finds that privacy boundary recognition is mainly identified according to three types: users’ privacy sensitivity, the affordance of platform technologies, and the social publicity of reading. Privacy boundary coordination is negotiated through the degree of relationship, the attributes of traces, and the principle of reciprocity. On this basis, the study reflects on the hidden concerns caused by the out-of-control coordination of digital reading traces privacy boundaries and proposes optimized paths such as the privacy boundary management mechanism under the refined segmentation of social relationships, the deidentification-based classification and dilution mechanism for digital reading traces, and the multi-level negotiation mechanism for the visibility degree of digital reading traces.

      Abstract448)      PDF(pc) (10141KB)(68)       Save
This study employs a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research, to conduct an in-depth analysis of the effects of cross-cultural communication of Chinese online literature. The findings indicate that translation challenges and cognitive levels are significant factors influencing overseas readers’ acceptance of Chinese web novels. Overseas readers are often attracted to the external cultural symbols presented in online texts, yet they display a profound rejection of the grassroots characteristics of popular culture contained within. Furthermore, they tend to overlook the deeper cultural values, leading to a disconnect between the“ form” and “quality” of Chinese online literature in cross-cultural dissemination. This study recommends enhancing the quality of online literature translation, emphasizing cultural adaptability, and raising creators’ awareness in cross-cultural communication to showcase the diverse aspects of Chinese culture.

Legal Risks and Governance Strategies of AI Speech Synthesis Technology in Audio Publishing : Foreign Experience and the Chinese Approach
      Zhang Yankun
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (3): 27-38.
      Abstract351)      PDF(pc) (9271KB)(72)       Save
As an emerging productive force driving the digital transformation of the audio publishing industry, AI speech synthesis technology is not only reshaping production models and industrial ecosystems but also engendering three critical legal risks : the protection of personality rights, copyright compliance, and data security governance. A comparative legal analysis indicates that the United States has developed a multilayered legislative framework to effectively mitigate risks, whereas the European Union has adopted a unified legislative approach to enhance transparency regulation and platform accountability. Drawing upon foreign regulatory experiences and integrating them with China’ s governance imperatives, this study proposes a composite legal framework based on the tripartite structure of“ rights definition–regulatory adaptation–risk prevention.” This framework entails establishing the independent legal status of voice rights and refining the criteria for infringement determination, formulating compliance regulations for the use and dissemination of copyrighted content, and strengthening security governance in the collection, storage, and cross-platform sharing of voice data. Simultaneously, proactive international cooperation should be pursued through the establishment of transnational regulatory mechanisms to address global governance challenges. By fostering the convergence of domestic regulatory frameworks with international legal mechanisms, this approach seeks to provide a robust institutional safeguard for the sustainable and orderly development of the audio publishing industry.

Starting from Marx’ s historical materialism, this study examines the imbalances and constraints inherent in spiritual and cultural production activities, and elucidates the sources of the driving force behind the subjectivity of publishing culture. Combining Hegel’ s proposition of “being is subject”, the logical mechanism of the publishing culture subject is analyzed. It proposes that culture and publishing share a unity of subject and object, with mutual transformation between the two. Introducing the concept of “being-in-itself and being-foritself”, the dialectical process of culture and publishing is investigated. Based on this theoretical analysis, three practical insights are proposed : fully stimulating cultural subjectivity, adhering to correct directional guidance, actively cultivating cultural talent teams, and vigorously promoting innovations in publishing technology.

This study, grounded in affordance theory, systematically analyzes the media logic of“ China-Style” anime IP, and while delving into its content narrative, media narrative, and the communication ecosystem within the industrial chain under transmedia contexts, based on the inherent mechanisms of anime IP’ s transmedia storytelling. The research reveals that guided by affordance logic, the content narrative of“ Chinese-style” anime IP focuses on cultural construction within storyworlds, employing multidimensional narrative strategies including character empathy, shared values, and the construction of participants’ social relationships to shape deep-level interactions between IP and audiences. Furthermore, the media narrative of“ Chinese-style” anime IP has evolved from traditional unidirectional linear communication models to contemporary transmedia dissemination paradigms. This transformation not only facilitates cross-border circulation of classic Chinese symbolic elements across media platforms but also enhances IP circulation and value realization within industrial chains.

During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Nationalist Government severely censored Marxist writings in the Nationalist Region through the enactment of harsh publishing regulations, the establishment of specialized censorship institutions, and the implementation of refined censorship procedures. The CPC responded positively by adopting appropriate measures at all stages of dissemination, promoting the publication, distribution and circulation of Marxist works by promoting the professionalization of publishing institutions, building a detailed book distribution network and accurately clearing up obstruction points in the dissemination of works, and so on. This battle between the censorship of Marxist writings and the breakout of Marxism was an important symptom of the ideological game between the Nationalists and the Communists during the War of Resistance, in which Marxism was more widely disseminated, exerted an important influence, and finally became “the best weapon for the liberation of our nation”.

Based on the three-dimensional framework of“ tools-stages-effectiveness”, this paper adopts the content analysis method to analyze the content of 244 digital publishing industrial policies published in China from 2006 to 2023. The results show that the overall distribution of policy tools is imbalanced, and the internal structure is out of order; the policy theme in different stages continues to deepen, but the cooperation of the policy subjects need to be strengthened; the overall policy effectiveness is on the low side, and the policy system needs to be improved. Subsequent policy adjustments should coordinate the proportion of the three types of policy tools and balance the internal structure of policy tools; promote the diversification of policy subjects and governance subjects, and improve the governance system of the digital publishing industry; improve the effectiveness of policies, and build a“ 1+N” policy system to promote the synergistic power of industrial policies.

Guided by the information ecology theory framework, this study incorporates six antecedent variables: organization support and society influence from the environmental dimension, self-efficacy and personal innovation from the individual dimension, and content satisfaction and perceived credibility from the content dimension. The data from 1114 survey respondents were analyzed using hierarchical regression analysis and qualitative comparative analysis to examine the importance of factors from various dimensions and to determine the configuration effects of factors influencing AIGC adoption behavior. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis indicate that enterprise support, community influence, self-efficacy, personal innovation, content satisfaction, and perceived credibility all have a significant positive impact on content adoption behavior. The relative importance of the three dimensions is as follows: content, individual, and environmental. The configuration path analysis reveals four configuration paths formed by the combination of the six antecedent variables, resulting in three cross-dimensional combination patterns: individual-content, environment-individual-content, and environment-content. The study finds that content dimension factors ultimately determine the adoption behavior of professionals towards AIGC, with self-efficacy and perceived credibility playing a key role in the adoption decision-making process.

Through in-depth interviews with 15 publishing practitioners across the country, it is found that AIGC is intrinsically related to the publishing industry in terms of the logic of content generation and creativity, the logic of information integration and knowledge base, and the logic of natural interaction and humanization. Based on their own perception of the materiality and mediation of technology, publishing practitioners have formed an attitude of anticipation and hesitation : the systematic upgrading of content production, organization and service driven by technology ; the migration of publishing forms and business paradigms; and the reconstruction of human-machine relationship, content-channel relationship, and cost-benefit relationship. The imagination of epoche has become an important part of AIGC’ s availability, and will affect the path, process and result of AIGC’ s integration into the traditional publishing industry : the imagination of efficient production of material content guides the path of AIGC’ s integration into the traditional publishing industry; the imagination of innovation and iteration of intermediary experience affects the process of AIGC’ s integration into the traditional publishing industry ; human-computer interaction with emotion is expected to be systematically upgraded. The imagination of human-computer inter-construction of emotions and attitudes determines the results of AIGC’ s integration into the traditional publishing industry.

In order to deeply analyze the difficulties of human-computer relationship in the current intelligent publishing, this paper firstly compares the difference between the ANT and the unity of tool and principle from the historical origin, and puts forward the concept of“ the unity of tool and principle” in the ancient technology philosophy of our country as a higher-dimensional direction to guide the development of the publishing industry, under the premise of confirming the reasonableness of the“ human-machine equality”. Subsequently, combined with the specific practice of the publishing process, the article suggests that the current production, proofreading and distribution of the“ human-machine” respectively show the characteristics of competition, complementary, intertwined relationship, and in the actual operation of the exposure of a variety of problems and defects. Therefore, the debugging standard of human-computer relationship should return to the inherent compliance of“ the unity of tool and principle”: clarifying the aesthetic connotation in the technology iteration, enriching the value point in the technology comparison, abiding by the industry standard in the technology change, and calibrating the technology advancement in the realistic needs.

      Abstract169)      PDF(pc) (8706KB)(48)       Save
The emotional reconstruction logic of translating children’ s books in modern China lies in the era’ s demands of children’ s education, reading, and enlightenment. This thesis delves into the emotional reconstruction strategies of translated children’ s books from the perspectives of how social actors explored the integration mechanism of inter-linguistic emotional communication, and how they created a positive developing atmosphere for children. Specifically, translated children’ s books construct an emotional framework,“ sympathizing children and being full of anticipations”, through aggregated themes such as orphans, homeless kids, little heroes, role models, etc. By exploring emotional elements in texts such as concerns for our war-torn country, the affection between teachers and students, the love between parents and kids, friendship, and the beauty of nature, a dual path of both emotional education and moral education is discovered. The translation and publication forms are filled with great emotional wisdom, including visual satisfaction, narrative art, and scientific penetration. This exploration reveals the effects of emotional reconstruction, finding that social emotions and text emotions have achieved resonance. Concretely, with the self-examination about the tradition, individual identity is acknowledged; by seeking solutions to realistic difficulties, children are endowed with rights; to strive for future development, institutional improvements are made for children.

      Abstract166)      PDF(pc) (14741KB)(67)       Save
Images are the life and subject of picture books. Absurd picture books use image design as a starting point, creatively creating styles, narrative clues, graphic and textual relationships, theme selection, and other aspects. They use unreasonable, illogical, and meaningless image elements to achieve the understanding of real logic and physical time and space. Absurd picture books not only reflect the reconstruction of the rationality of picture books, but also embody the instinctive fantasy and game spirit, which are in line with the psychological and thinking characteristics of children. They can create value beyond knowledge tr ansmission and moral education, and can achieve insight and value guidance for childhood aesthetics and children’ s culture. Based on this, combined with children’ s interests, preferences, behavioral reactions, and reading styles when reading absurd picture books, it can provide some inspiration for exploring and applying absurd elements in picture book creation and reading guidance.

Reshaping and Incentivizing : Reconceptualizing Editorial Subjectivity in the Digital Intelligence Era
Wang Zhigang , Zhao Yingqiao, Lu Bing
      Publishing Journal    2025, 33 (4): 5-13.
      Abstract137)      PDF(pc) (8158KB)(85)       Save
In the era of digital intelligence, the issue of editorial subjectivity has undergone transformative changes that demand transcending the traditional subject-object dichotomy framework. Editorial subjectivity now manifests as an “intersubjectivity” dynamically generated through human-technology interactions, evolving into a human-machine intersubjectivity shaped by the interplay between human and artificial intelligence. Under the “human-machine hybrid subjectivity” paradigm, AI technologies are fundamentally reshaping editorial subjectivity through three key transitions : from individual to collective subjectivity, linear to distributed subjectivity, and experience-based to data-driven subjectivity. Meanwhile, to address potential alienation issues arising from technological artifacts during development, this study reaffirms editors’ crucial role as “power subjects” in cultural construction and ethical governance. It emphasizes their irreplaceable function in regulating technology application and guiding value orientation, thereby maintaining the humanistic essence of editorial practice within intelligent systems.

      Abstract135)      PDF(pc) (8619KB)(50)       Save
This paper uses the grounded theory and the interpretative structural model( ISM) method to determine the influencing factors of the integration service effect of the store, and then reveals the relationship between the influencing factors of the integration service effect of the store. The research shows that most of the library-store integration projects in China are policydriven, and policy support is the most fundamental reason affecting the service effect of the library-store integration, which plays the most critical role in the service effect of the library-store integration. In addition, geographical location, cooperation mode and store environment, as the middle level, also play an important role in the service effect of the library-store integration. Based on this, this paper believes that we should start with the formulation of diversified policies, the optimization of cooperation models, and the follow-up of user requirements to improve the effect of the integration service of the library-store integration.
