Abstract: This article proposes a new concept of the “digital value trap” to explain why digital transformation in academic knowledge services may lead to value co-destruction. Based on the Social Construction of Technology(SCOT)theory, it interviews a range of stakeholders, including publishers, universities, libraries, and users. By analyzing the interview data, the article constructs a theoretical model. The findings reveal that the digital value trap is caused by the interaction of three factors: technological deficiencies, goal incongruence among actors, and institutional constraints. Moreover, the trap exhibits phased evolutionary characteristics. To escape the trap, it is necessary to establish an integrative governance framework tailored to different stages. In the prevention stage, the focus should be on improving the reliability and usability of technological infrastructure to rebuild trust. During the intervention stage, it is crucial for multiple actors to achieve a consensus on interests via collaborative mechanisms. In the reconstruction stage, adapted institutional frameworks enable knowledge resources to circulate more effectively.
