Abstract:

As a member of the imperial examination scholars in the late Ming Dynasty, Wu
Jiamo’s compilation and engraving of Kong Sheng Jia Yu Tu not only has its own particularity,
but also has a certain universality of the times, which fully reflects the social and cultural
atmosphere of the late Ming Dynasty. This book was fifirst engraved in the 17th year of Wanli, and
was later added and modifified by Wu. Under the background of respecting Confucius and valuing
Confucianism and dethroning different schools of thought in the Ming Dynasty, it is reasonable
for Wu to compile and engrave this book out of his self-conscious spirit of defending Taoism and
his personal factors of seeking official advancement by carving books, which enlightens us to
understand the phenomenon of a large number of Confucian books published in the Ming Dynasty.
However, this book is not what Wu claimed to be, it is a combination of Wu, which can reveal the
trend of counterfeiting and stealing of the engraved books in the late Ming Dynasty. After this book
was published, many derivative books appeared and have been popular up to now. It is related
to the world’s credulity in Wu’s words, more importantly, this book has certain literature value,
artistic value and commercial value.
