Towards a Semantics for XML Markup
    Publishing Journal    2016, 24 (4): 18-.
    Abstract936)      PDF(pc) (1193KB)(382)       Save

Although XML Document Type Definitions provide a mechanism for specifying, in machine-readable
form, the syntax of an XML markup language, there is no comparable mechanism for specifying the semantics
of an XML vocabulary. That is, there is no way to characterize the meaning of XML markup so that the facts and
relationships represented by the occurrence of XML constructs can be explicitly, comprehensively, and mechanically
identified. This has serious practical and theoretical consequences. On the positive side, XML constructs can be
assigned arbitrary semantics and used in application areas not foreseen by the original designers. On the less positive
side, both content developers and application engineers must rely upon prose documentation, or, worse, conjectures
about the intention of the markup language designer — a process that is time-consuming, error-prone, incomplete,
and unverifiable, even when the language designer properly documents the language. In addition, the lack of a
substantial body of research in markup semantics means that digital document processing is undertheorized as an
engineering application area. Although there are some related projects underway (XML Schema, RDF, the Semantic
Web) which provide relevant results, none of these projects directly and comprehensively address the core problems
of XML markup semantics. This paper (i) summarizes the history of the concept of markup meaning, (ii) characterizes
the specific problems that motivate the need for a formal semantics for XML and (iii) describes an ongoing research
project : the BECHAMEL Markup Semantics Project —that is attempting to develop such a semantics.

Mobile reading has been widely used by college students including those from China, Japan and Korea. Based on the Uses and Gratifications theory, this study tries to identify whether there are any significant differences of motivations and the evaluation of mobile reading among the college students from these three Asian countries.By statistical analysis of 1316 samples collected by questionnaire survey, we find that Entertainment Needs and Information-Acquiring Needs are the two most important motivations of college students’use of mobile reading, while the Chinese and the Korean care more about Entertainment Needs and the Japanese care more about Information-Acquiring Needs. And we also identify Interaction Needs is becoming an essential motivation of users’mobile reading, which Chinese and Korean value more than Japanese. In the aspects of user evaluation,we find that Chinese and Korean are more satisfied with the contents than digital platforms and systems, while Japanese are not so satisfied with the contents as digital platforms provided by mobile reading providers.

In recent years, the fund paper ratio, being regarded as an important index of journal evaluation, has been the focus of the journal. Taking download frequency, citation frequency and secondary literature selection index as the constituent elements of the academic influence and the articles supported by funds published in 20 college journals for the study sample, this paper finds from the empirical study that there is no necessary connection between fund papers and their academic influence. The fund papers published in the journals selected in the CSSCI are highly concerned by readers, and these papers also have high academic quality. But it is not the case to the fund papers which are not published in the CSSCI journals. National fund papers, whether published in the CSSCI journals or not, are highly concerned by readers, but these national fund papers do not have higher academic quality than other fund papers. In the practice of editing work, we should take an objective and rational attitude towards fund papers in order to really improve the academic quality of journals.

It argues that the research scope should be confined to the editing activity; the basic editing rules are universal for all editing activities, as general principles, they govern sub-rules, and are embodied in the concrete form of editing; it is too arbitrary to claim  that“there is only one basic editing rule”, which is not conducive to the further study of the basic editing rules; the best way to describe the basic editing rules is the“content +rule”pattern.
