Western Experience of Publishing and Dissemination of Chinese Culture : A Case

Abstract:

Columbia University Press has published Chinese books since the beginning of the
20th century. At present, it has published 48 kinds of Chinese series books, with a total of 987,
which boasts the complete categories, the largest number and the greatest influence among
western publishing houses. This paper aims to examine the publishing experience of Columbia
University Press in dissemination the Chinese culture during the past century from the following
five dimensions : communication subject, content, channel, audience and its effect, and then
summarize the enlightenment of its publishing practice, so as to improve China’s international
publishing competitiveness as well as international communication capacity.
