Abstract:

Based on the collection and arrangement of relevant historical materials in modern
newspapers and periodicals, and using the methods of statistics, comparison and induction, this
study mainly discusses the hidden social network and the will of the times behind the publicity and
dissemination of ancient books, as well as its reconstruction of the modern image and function
of ancient books. The paper holds that the exhibition of ancient books in modern China were
essentially produced by the concerted effort of cultural conservatism and nationalism. On the
one hand, the exhibition expanded the transmission path of traditional culture, and the ancient
documents and books put on the shelf had been spread to the wider world through the exhibition
space; On the other hand, inheriting culture was not the fundamental purpose of the exhibition.
In essence, the exhibition cast itself into a patriotic device by borrowing some images and
symbols from ancient books, to enhance national self-confidence, and to release signals of the
determination to resisting foreign aggression.
