Abstract:

American independent bookstores have seen various development periods

since 1930s, including lack of brick-and-mortar bookstores, rise of chained booksellers,

competition of online booksellers and appearance of audio books. Despite all these,

American independent bookstores are still alive. American independent bookstores have

bottomed out and been thriving since 2009. American independent bookstores are featured

with varied themes and some of them can be regarded as role models among independent

bookstores. The article analyzes development history of American independent bookstores

and combs their operation experiences，such as valuing community，features， industrial

collaboration and varied products and services. Some suggestions are made in the article so

that to provide some reference for domestic independent bookstores, such as strengthening

features, developing bookstore tourism and deepening reading promotion.
