Abstract:

Textbooks are the carrier of classic knowledge and discourses of times, which
belong to a kind of authoritative text that read by everyone. The influences produced by the
textbooks make every state intervene in their publishing positively. This article analyses the role
that played by the state in textbook publishing during modern China. It suggests that the state has
greatly influenced the big picture of textbook publishing by making a series of legal restraints,
textbook censorship and compilation, expropriating authority and setting up agents in modern
China, which enable it to manage and control its publishing.
