Abstract:

The paper points out that the meaning construction of discourse in children’s
interactive picture books relies on the integration of various symbolic resources. These symbolic
resources have a broad scope, which not only includes the language symbolic, as well as
images, space, and color. As a new type of digital publication, children’s interactive picture
books aggregate rich resources such as words, images, colors, and sounds, showing clear
characteristics of multimodal, which are difficult to be solely explained by image and visual
analysis. Based on visual narrative theory and multimodal discourse analysis theory, this paper
explores how an interactive children’s picture book, a typical new digital publication, carries
out visual narrative and communication with the characteristics of digital media, how different
modalities in the visual system work together, and how multimodal discourse participates in the
construction of meaning in interactive picture books.
