Abstract:

A history of publishing is actually a history of human civilization. Publishing is

not only a path to human civilization， but also a means to identify human civilization. In the

book “History of Chinese and Foreign Publishing”，I gave a defining judgment of eight verbs

for publishing ：“

Publishing is the process and activity of collecting， mining， sorting， editing，

collating， checking， dissemination， and inheritance of human knowledge and information.

Activities.” It can be simplified as ：“

Publishing is an important activity for mankind to collect

information， sort out knowledge， collect culture， and inherit civilization.” And “discipline” is a

free translation of English discipline， which refers to a relatively independent knowledge system

that focuses on Classification of knowledge and subjects of study. Publishing discipline is an

independent knowledge system related to publishing， or knowledge classification and learning

subjects related to publishing. China currently divides all human knowledge into 13 disciplines and

110 first-level disciplines. In 1998， the Ministry of Education classified editing and publishing as

a secondary discipline under the primary discipline of journalism and communication. Since then，

the publishing discipline has made certain developments， but overall it is not ideal. This year is

a 10-year discipline catalog adjustment year. We should actively promote the construction and

upgrade of publishing disciplines on the basis of re-understanding the publishing and publishing

disciplines.
