Summary of“High-end Forum on Discipline Construction of Publishing Science”:
The Theoretical and Practical Exploration of the First-level Discipline Construction

Abstract:

This paper summarizes and comments the five topics on the theme of first-level
discipline construction of publishing science in the “High-end Forum on Discipline Construction
of Publishing Science”
:(1)The establishment of the first-level discipline of Publishing Science
in China depends on :the times calls for the first-level discipline construction of Publishing
Science with Chinese characteristics; the subject construction of Publishing Science in China
has the historical support of carrier, technology, symbol (culture), book form and system;
the accumulated achievements of the publishing discipline show that the Publishing Science
has formed a relatively stable discipline system; China’s publishing discipline has reached
the standards and conditions for the establishment of first-level disciplines.(2)Current
status of foreign publishing education : Publishing education in the United States is divided
into three categories : undergraduate publishing major, summer professional certificate
course and master’s degree; at present, 76 universities in 13 countries offer undergraduate
education courses in Publishing, 124 universities in 26 countries offer postgraduate education
courses in Publishing,and 50 universities in 12 countries offer doctoral education programs in
publishing.(3)Discussion on the nature of Publishing Science : Publishing Science has obvious
interdisciplinary characteristics, has formed an open and inclusive disciplinary ecosystem, and has
the characteristics of the interaction between publishing theory and publishing practice.(4)As a
first level discipline, Publishing can be set up as four major directions : Basic Publishing Theory,
Editing, Distribution, and Modern Publishing Technology, and six research directions : Publishing
History, Publishing Thought, Publishing Theory, Publishing Economy, Publishing Management and
Publishing Technology.(5)The current problems and historical responsibilities of publishing science.
