Abstract:

This paper examines Jean Toomer’ s Cane to explore the interplay among cover, text, and social trends, thereby contributing to an interdisciplinary dialogue between editorial studies and literary analysis. Cover and text coexist symbiotically, wherein cover functioning as both a visual synopsis of the text and a reflection of the designers’ interpretation and engagement with the work. Moreover, the cover design of Cane reflects the shifts in societal focuses : from the subtle sarcasm of racism to overt challenges to segregation, and subsequently to the reevaluation of racial dynamics and an increased focus on Black women’ s status. This evolving cover design thus encapsulates the unique historical trajectory of this work.
