Abstract:

Invoking constructivist theory, this paper explains the application of the Siku
Quanshu to various cultural scenes in modern society as a symbolic operation of traditional cultural
heritage by all parties involved. Focusing on the photocopying process of the Siku Quanshu,
it examines the photocopying programs and related actions invested by Chinese and foreign
governments under the new printing technology. It shows that the production and reproduction of
traditional cultural symbols in the national and international context is the result of the interaction
between the forces of “self-shaping” and “other-shaping”.
