Abstract:

Based on Bourdieu’s theory of practice, this study takes a qualitative approach to
examine fan-subbing groups as an online sharing practice, analyzing their intrinsic motivations,
practice modes, and dilemmas to provide a new perspective of interpreting cultural production
and digital laboring in the context of Chinese cyberspace. The study found that the mode of fan
subbing is a combination of voluntariness, freedom, autonomy and self-management, and
that members share subtitles out of the motive of accumulating social and cultural capital, and
ultimately presenting altruistic results. Fan-subbing groups also face a dilemma due to external
constraints and internal value conflicts.
