Abstract:

There are some disagreements and misunderstanding on the Society for the Diffusion of Christian
and General Knowledge among the Chinese in the academic circles. Through extensive reading of the original
references, four facts have been clarified. Firstly, after its establishment, the Society for the Diffusion of
Christian and General Knowledge among the Chinese maintained relationship with Chinese Book and Tract
Society in Glasgow as parent society and affiliated society. Secondly, the exact time of renaming its Chinese
name from Tong Wen Shu Hui to Guang Xue Hui was in 1892. Thirdly, the printing press founded by Alexander
Williamson before 1887 was Mo Hai Shu Ju, which had neither inheritance nor business relation with London
Missionary Press founded by London Missionary Society. Fourthly, Huang Chao Jing Shi Wen Xu Bian was
published by a lithographic print workhouse in Shanghai rather than the Society for the Diffusion of Christian
and General Knowledge among the Chinese.
