Abstract:

This article explores a comprehensive discussion on the publications of the Oriental Book Company during the Republic of China period, including Hu Shi Wencun, Duxiu Wencun, Menghe Wencun, and other Wencun editions. The research focuses on the following aspects, such as the general situation of Wencun which typically refers to a selected collection of works by a particular writer or scholar, the subjectivity of editors and publishers, the “super attached texts” of various Wencun editions, the royalty problems of Wencun editions, and the value or significance of Wencun editions. The author states that the above Wencun editions, the unique form of publications, should be the great and special contribution made by the Oriental Book Company. The editor and publisher Wang Mengzou played a special planning and organizing role in the publication process of the selected works, and the Oriental Book Company did not intentionally embezzle the author’ s royalties when facing operational hardships. The final conclusion is that these Wencun editions are not only a good summary of the early New Culture Movement, but also the most important achievements of the New Culture. Their publication had a great impact at that time and is of great value for future generations.
