Abstract: Book industrialism refers to the comprehensive implementation of industrialist values and methodologies in all aspects of book publishing and operation. It is mainly manifested in three aspects: the utilitarianism, materialization and capitalization of book production. The tribalization of modern readers is an inevitable consequence of the development of book industrialism, with five common types: knowledge tribes, information tribes, interest tribes, identity tribes and ideological tribes. The fundamental way forward for reader development in the new era is to sublate book industrialism, with the basic principle of“ two combinations”: combining book production with social interests and combining book production with social production methods. To build a reader culture with Chinese characteristics in the new era, it is necessary to make breakthroughs and advance systematically from both macro and micro perspectives, thereby promoting the revitalization of the publishing industry and the great development and prosperity of culture.
