Abstract:

How book editors participate in editing practice is a basic theoretical problem in the
study of editing and publishing science. From the perspective of cultural intermediaries theory
and Maguire’s “three dimensions” of cultural intermediaries, this paper analyzes the complex
cultural production practice of “book-doing” in literary book editing based on the “editor’s
Notes” written by 48 literary book editors reflecting the editing process. It is found that literary
book editors generally complete the material production, symbolic production and legitimate
production in the linear process of construction practice, knowledge practice and influence
practice in the complex balancing art of the mixed logic of aesthetic logic and market logic.
The results show that as a result of cultural practice of both material and symbolic production,
books are “done” by editors rather than “written” by writers. The product of writer’s practice is
the work, and the product of editing practice is the book. Book editor is a highly active “cultural
intermediaries” rather than a functional “gatekeeper” in the production of literary books.
